Cub Scout Camp 2014

Cody went to his first cub scout day camp during the last week of June. For five straight days we dropped him off at our church by 7:00am where all the scouts carpooled to the county fairgrounds. At camp they kept the boys marching from station to station all day long and then Cody would get home by 6:00 in the evening. He had a blast and the only thing he complained about was that it wasn't long enough.

Steve and I each spent a day volunteering and it was so fun to spend time just with Cody and be a part of all the fun. It was a lot better than having him come home and asking him how it went and just getting a "fine" answer. After my day of volunteering I was tired and Steve felt the same when he got home from his day. I don't know how the others did it all week! While at camp we got really good at counting to 12 since that's how many scouts were in the Den. There were over 500 scouts there plus hundreds of volunteers and leaders so you really had to keep the boys together.

Den 14 eating lunch in their den. The theme was super heroes. Cody is on the far right with the gatorade in his mouth.

One of the coolest stations was geology. There was a bucket filled with sand and rocks for each scout. They got to put scoops of sand into the graters and run it though the stream of water to sift for rocks.

Cody found 40 different rocks in his bucket. Here he is holding the fools gold.

His favorite rock was the Apache Tears. It is a beautiful shiny black rock, but when you shine a light through it it glows.

All the kids looking at their rock treasures. With their hats and t-shirts they all look the same when you look down on them from above. The only way I could identify Cody throughout the day was by looking for his shorts.

The geology guy was cool. He built all the stuff they used to sift for rocks. He even does birthday parties and reunions :)

BB guns! Cody's favorite. And I was so impressed with how well he did.

Chinese Checkers

On Steve's day the scouts got to go back to the geology station and cut open geodes.

Then they had an egg drop. Each of the dens were given drinking straws, a latex glove, and some puffed rice to see who could make a contraption to protect their egg. Then they dropped them from the top of the fire engine ladder.

Their egg didn't quite make it.

They built catapults and shot skittles into paper cup castles...

BB guns again!

I'm glad Cody had such a great time. Cody was able to pass off tons of requirements and now he is ready to advance from Wolf to Bear. I was talking to his Wolf leader at church the other day and she said she was really going to miss Cody because he's not only lots of fun and likes to learn, but he's also a great leader and looks out for the other boys who need help.

During the week of Scout Camp I realized how much I rely on Cody. I missed having him around! He is a big helper when I ask him to do something, but he also helps the girls get along and have fun. Kylee and Livy were lost without him that week since Cody's usually the one that comes up with fun things to do and knows how to keep the peace.
